Hurricane Response – Haiti
After
the devastating hurricanes that battered Haiti in 2008, WorldWater & Solar
Technologies staff worked with the Red Cross and socially-minded philanthropists
based in Haiti to bring two Mobile MaxPure® Brackish Water purification
systems to Haiti to help alleviate the water crisis caused by the hurricanes.
The storms destroyed the already unreliable electrical grid, caused
severe flooding and blew debris into the streets making transportation
of goods nearly impossible and caused pollution of water sources. However,
the Mobile MaxPure® (MMP) is ready to combat all of these scenarios.
Designed to be transported by air, water or truck, the MMP can make it
to any site and can be running using only the power of the sun- even
on cloudy days- to produce much needed energy and water pumping/purification
in the wake of a disaster.
In the wake of a natural disaster such as that experienced by Haiti,
there is an urgent need for drinking water, food, basic relief items
and medical assistance, as well as for shelter material. Looking more
long-term it is important to promote disaster risk reduction activities
in affected communities, which will contribute to building community
safety and resilience for the future, as well as the integration of risk
management with a focus on climate change. The Mobile Max Systems can
meet both the short and longer term needs of disaster relief.
WorldWater is currently working with people in Haiti to bring additional
Mobile Max systems (for water displacement activities and electricity)
and Mobile MaxPure® systems (for the provision of water purification
and electricity) to Haiti in advance of the next hurricane season to
be prepared to meet people’s needs ahead of the storms. This will effectively
reduce the hardships and disease people experience in the wake of natural
disasters.
