Hurricane Katrina Response
Waveland, Mississippi
As
images depicting the disaster inflicted along the Gulf Coast of the United
States began to appear on the news, WorldWater & Solar Technology staff
began to imagine a way to leverage our technological capabilities in
order to bring relief to the residents, Emergency Responders and volunteers
in the afflicted areas. Thus the Mobile MaxPure® (MMP) prototype was
imagined.
As the first ever solar-powered water pumping and purification system,
the MMP was the sole source of potable water for the town of Waveland,
Mississippi for over seven months! In conjunction with the Morrell Foundation,
the unit was placed near a temporary structure providing assistance to
affected families and serving as a home base for responders and volunteers.
In addition to pumping and purifying polluted water, making it safe
for drinking, bathing and cooking, the unit also provided a ready source
of power for a range of equipment used in rebuilding efforts.
The
MMP prototype was built directly onto a flat-bed trailer making it easy
to transport. Though the MMP has since evolved to a more compact design
that can be easily separated from its custom designed trailer, we have
also learned that a non-purifying solar generator system is well suited
to the fixed trailer-built design. Thus, the Mobile Max™ and Mobile MaxPower™
systems were developed . These systems also come with a pump for
water displacement and irrigation activities. The Mobile Max™ gathers
its power from the rays of the sun, while the Mobile MaxPower™ also comes
with a battery bank to allow for nighttime operation.
