Refugee Camps – Darfur
Refugees
living in camps all over the world suffer from lack of basic necessities. According
to the World Health Organization a child under 5 years old dies every
minute due to lack of access to clean drinking water. WorldWater & Solar
Technologies, Inc. (WW) is committed to bringing water and electricity
to people throughout the world using reliable, sustainable technology.
Two NGOs working in the camps sought to bring potable water to the enormous
number of people living in Darfur’s refugee camps. Thirst No More
and Humanitarian International Service Group decided to pursue our Mobile
MaxPure® (MMP) as a solution.
MMP presents the most economical solution to bringing clean water to
people. MMP can provide potable water from polluted freshwater
sources for less than one penny per gallon in the first year,
with costs decreasing even further in the following year after capital
expenditures have been accounted for. The reliable and sustainable use
of solar power, the built-in purification system, the ready availability
of consumable parts, the ease of use and rugged design of the unit were
just a few additional strong factors MMP offered, leading to its selection
by the NGOs.
WW staff worked closely with the NGOs to order and install accessories
for the MMP most fitting for the needs of the camp refugees and workers,
to provide guidance on site selection and testing of potential wells
at various sites, to coordinate shipping of the units and to provide
installation/maintenance training to people at the sites.
Note
from HISG’s Special Projects Director:
"The one unit we placed in Nyala Town is having a BIG impact in stemming the spread of cholera.. which so impressed the Governor he asked to meet with us (which has never before happened with any NGO)"
